There’s a new movie coming … it’s got a dog and it’s got Harrison Ford and it’s got a great story.
What more could you want?
Okay, it’s not sci-fi and it’s not Star Wars, and there is no wookie sidekick… but still… there’s Harrison Ford and a great dog character, a large and powerful St. Bernard-Scotch Collie mix. They make a great team!
It will be interesting to see how close the movie adheres to the book but the trailer sure makes the movie look good.
The producers describe the movie thus:
As a live-action/animation hybrid, THE CALL OF THE WILD employs cutting edge visual effects and animation technology in order to render the animals in the film as fully photorealistic–and emotionally authentic–characters.
In the book, and from what information I can find so far it’s the same in the movie, the dog is named Buck. He was stolen from his home in California where he lived as a pampered pet. Buck was sold and transplanted to the cold wilds of the Alaskan Yukon during the Gold Rush of the 1890s.
He becomes part of a team of dogs used for mail delivery by sled, and through various adventures and many hardships, he is finally saved from death by John Thornton (played by Harrison Ford), who nurses him back to health.
They go on an adventure together, looking for gold. I can’t say what adventures they’ll have in the movie, but from the trailer it looks pretty exciting.
The book ends with Buck answering “the call of the wild” … we’ll see how it all turns out in the movie.
