Looking for low residue dog food? Or maybe just wondering what in the world it is?

Simply put, low residue means there’s not a lot of stuff left after the dog has digested the food. Another way of putting it might be to say it is highly digestible dog food.

Benefits of Low Residue

In other words, this sort of dog food is made of things that are easily digestible in a dog’s gut, so there isn’t a lot of extra stuff leftover. The gut absorbs all the nutrients. That means there is a decrease in the amount of stools, and how often the dog needs to poop.

This has the benefit of making it easier on a dog’s digestive system, and it’s even got the side benefit for the owners that there isn’t so much dog poop to clean up.

One of the hallmarks of a good low reside dog food is that it has a high protein content. This is what dogs would naturally eat, and is especially important for dogs with tummy troubles. Protein should always be the first ingredient on the list for any low residue dog food.

Is Grain Free Better?

And don’t be fooled into thinking grain free necessarily means low residue, and it certainly doesn’t mean starch free.

If a dog food is starch free, the kibble pet food doesn’t include this unnatural (to carnivorous pets) sugar source (starch is simply a polysugar).

However a grain free product still has starches such as potatoes, peas, and tapioca. This doesn’t make it a better kibble, but only creates a perception of benefits which scientific studies do not prove to be true.(1)

Bottom line, starch is starch, whether from potatoes and tapioca, or corn and wheat. (However, I think there are other factors to consider, such as GMOs and allergens, and think those might make potatoes, for instance, a more favorable dog nutrient than corn or wheat.)

All you can do is check out the different foods, then go for the best dog food you can afford to feed your pup.

Just be sure if it’s a low residue whatever low residue food dog food you choose, it is high in protein like the Wysong brand of dog food above, instead of full of starch. Dogs digest protein better than starch, which leaves less residue.
